Hello World!

I'm Annie, and this is my website. I mostly just created it for fun and to have a central place to put my longform writing, but I'm hoping other folks might get something out of it too. I'm still figuring out what exactly I want it to be, but right now it's sort of halfway between a blog and a 90's-style homepage.

I've always enjoyed both writing and technology, so it was pretty much inevitable that I'd make a website of my own at some point. I've actually tried blogging a couple times before, first using Blogspot and then using Wordpress, but I never managed to stick with it for very long. Eventually I realized that my approach to blogging was making it feel more like a chore than a hobby. I'd managed to convince myself that Having A Blog was a Big Deal, that it was my Responsibility to share my Very Important Thoughts with the world, and that felt dreary as heck. (Not to mention terribly silly and self-important — after all, I'm literally just some random lady with an internet connection.) So I took down all my old sites and took some time to think about what had appealed to me about blogging in the first place, and realized that I didn't care about having a ~platform~ or being a ~content creator~ or anything like that — I just liked being creative and making things from scratch. So that's what I'm trying to do here. I've decided not to use any sort of modern content management system, and instead code the whole thing myself in good old-fashioned HTML and CSS (with a tiny dollop of Javascript to make the more finicky bits work), because I think it's more fun that way. It's probably not going to be especially polished, and it's certainly not going to be anything formal or professional, but honestly that suits me just fine. If it appeals to you as well, I hope you'll stick around!

I don't want to focus too much on my personal identity here, but it seems only fair to at least give you a sense of what to expect, so here's a bit about me. I'm a transgender woman;2 my pronouns are she/her/hers, and I'm as queer as a three-dollar bill.3 I'm about three decades old, give or take a bit. My favorite ecosystem is the marine coast. I've studied and worked in a variety of scientific fields.4 I'm a nondenominational pagan; the details of my particular spiritual path are complex and constantly evolving, but right now it's mostly a synthesis of Greco-Roman polytheism,5 Wicca with the gender-essentialist and culturally-appropriative bits stripped out,6 and a whole lot of good old-fashioned freeform nature worship. I'm a pretty domestically-inclined person — I love cooking, gardening, handcrafts, and the like. I knit, sew, embroider, spin, and crochet, and I'm planning to learn weaving next. I also sing and play several instruments, and I draw, do linocut and papercut art, and am learning to make pixel art. I just generally like being creative and making things, which is what I hope to do with this site. Feel free to drop me a message at lavendergrrrl@mailfence.com if you'd like to chat!
